Healthcare Debate: Botox Tax Is Out, Tanning Tax In

Amendment by Majority Leader Reid adds new tax on indoor tanning.

Following an amendment made by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, (D-NV), Senate Democrats on Monday secured the 60 votes needed to end debate and overcome another procedural hurdle on healthcare reform.

Changes in the amendment included the elimination of the 5% tax on elective cosmetic surgery. The Reid amendment, however, called for a 10% tax on indoor tanning services. According to report, the amendment grants an exception for so-called phototherapy services performed by licensed medical professionals.

According to the Indoor Tanning Association, there are 25,000 professional indoor tanning facility businesses in the U.S.
